Word on the Street

Image
I thought I would highlight some artists for this post. The general "theme" would be urban or "street art." I hope you enjoy their work as much as I do. MIKE BRODIE aka. POLAROID KIDD Brodie is a self taught photographer who portrays a street culture made up of people who choose the vagabond lifestyle. In order to record their lives he abandoned the comforts of a home and joined them. His connection with people is raw and in the midst of the chaotic life on the streets he captures the intrinsic beauty of humanity. BANKSY Is a street artist, whose work is predominately found in but not limited to London. Banksy uses his detailed stencils to create politically and socially charged satirical messages. Several "pieces" include rats, London police officers or small children playing with hazardous objects. SHEPARD FAIREY Is a graphic artist who first became famous for his work with skateboarding companies, though he is probably better known as the artist behin...

Lights, Camera, Action!

Image
The rumors you have heard are true, I do indeed have photography lights. eeeeeee! sdfkjhdfk (these are my sounds of excitement). I have wanted photography lights for some time now, well since I took my studio light class in 2007. Any time I want to take photographs I use natural light, which is great because that is what I usually prefer. Though there have been times in the past where I have been asked to take portraits for one reason or another. I either have to take them outside (which can be less than ideal if it is cold, raining, or too overcast...etc) or I must take them inside (unless it is well lit by windows or artificial light, you have motion blur in addition to unflattering shadows...etc). Also note, I dislike using my camera's flash because it bleaches lighter fabrics and skin tones and can feel too stark if you are wanting a softer feel. Basically in regards to photography, it is all about the light. My hopes of owning photography lights were dashed when I realized ju...

Subject of the day: Mathematics

Image
I have always kind of enjoyed math (well, math I could understand). Especially after watching the movie "A Beautiful Mind." I instantly wanted to own a white wax pencil that I could write complex math problems on windows and discover new game theories. Well I haven't done math for a while and have lost a majority of my knowledge and math skills. Here are some math problems I still have no trouble in solving. Also check out "Maths" on Look Around You:

Happy MLK Day!

Image
I love that we have today. It represents strife and pain but it also represents a turning of a new page. I am so thankful for certain people in history who could show the way and point towards what is right regardless of who is against them and at whatever the cost.

Psalm 46

Image
1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah 8 Come and see the works of the LORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire. 10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the...

House Sitting

Image
This weekend I was house sitting for my friend Kim. I watched Frisbee, a cute rambunctious black lab mix. (That's snow on her nose) During one of the evenings alone, I decided to take Kim's advice and use her glorious Cuisinart to make hummus. I have never made hummus before and had previously asked her for her recipe which she so graciously shared with me. So I will in turn pass this knowledge on to you. STEP 1: The ingredients are as follows: 1 can chick peas (drained and rinsed – about 9 ounces of chick peas if you aren’t using beans from a can) 1 clove garlic (or 1 tsp minced garlic) ¼ cup lemon juice 2 Tbsp water (more or less to obtain a smooth consistency) 2 Tbsp olive oil 1/3 cup tahini 1 tsp salt STEP 2: Add chick peas and garlic alternately with liquids into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. STEP 3:Then add the tahini and salt and blend again. (Confession, I had no clue what tahini was and in the jar it looked gross like a muted melted milkshake of ...

New

I love new beginnings. New beginnings in time such as days or years, metaphorical beginnings, spiritual beginnings...etc. Everyday is a new day with endless possibilities. Its kind of like Christmas presents... they could be anything and they are anything, until you unwrap them of course. Also with new beginnings means a clean fresh start. You can wipe down your proverbial chalkboard and just erase everything. Sometimes I have to have mental renewals for redemption's sake. What I mean is, sometimes I say or do something completely stupid and moronic; I normally dwell on that stupid action for a very long time and rerun it through my mind over and over again until I decide that there is nothing I can do to undo it and I will just have to start fresh. I then vow not to do said stupid thing ever again. I guess it is a form of repentance really (though I am not talking about a sinful repentance in this case). Though I do like the new spiritual slate, taking communion or witnessing so...
