Week Zero- Carnival

Image
Today's event was the grandaddy of all events we have put on to date. We had a dunk tank where we dunked a real live USC Trojan! We had inflatable games like Jacob's Ladder, Wreaking Ball and Rapid Fire. We served lemonade, popcorn and hot dogs. We set up a face-cutout standee for photo ops. We had music and prizes. Over a four hour span there were 500+ students involved in our carnival. I would say what # of this or that we handed out today, but I don't really know the stats off hand other than the fact that we handed out 750 lemonades today. All the rest would be conjecture, so I will just say that we handed out a lot of things today. Here are just a few photos. The Carnies! Whelp, I am ultra tired and am going sign off. Goodnight my loves! xoxo Rachelle

Week Zero- Snow Cones & Frisbee

Image
Today's promo items: Sunglasses, tumblers and snowcones # of snowcones handed out: 700 # of tumblers and sunglasses: I actually don't know these numbers Yes, you read correctly, we handed out 700 snowcones today. We set up a frisbee throw game, a bean bag toss game and our snowcone table. If you made one out of four tries you won either the tumbler or the pair of sunglasses depending on the game.  Following our snowcone/games and prize giveaway we played ultimate frisbee (well our team did while I took pictures, my ankle isn't exactly in tip top shape unfortunately.) Here are a few of those pictures... ND talking to people on the other side of the fence before the game. Action shots Cheerleading Whelp, I better get my sleep, tomorrow is the carnival! O_O

Week Zero- Activities Fair

Image
The madness has begun! Today we were busy little bees handing out flyers, promo products (as seen in the previous post) and introducing new students to our group. If you are not in the know, UCLA's Activities Fair is complete chaos. Basically every group on campus sets up a table and has informative flyers, giveaways and sometimes games to make their first impression to incoming students and returning students. Today's promo items: T-shirts and drawstring bags # of bags handed out: 300 # of shirts handed out: 350 And countless conversations and connections made. Needless to say, today was a good day. And boy, am I beat. (Note to self: wear better shoes next time, srsly. -___- ) Just some shots of today.  This doesn't even give justice to  how cray everything was. Handing out flyers. Bird's eye view. How cute are they?! Good looking bunch if I do say so myself! \

Promo Time!

Image
All of our hard work has paid off! Last night at our ultra productive Leadership Meeting, we revealed all our new promotional items. Drum roll please... Drawstring bag, t-shirt, pencil case, pen, id holder, sunglasses and cold coffee cup. I didn't include the frosted tumbler because it kept rolling out of the picture. Note: The colors look more awesome in person and for some reason the oranges differ from product to product in the photo. These are some of our promo cards and a sticker for our upcoming events. Let week zero begin!

Phaedrus

There comes a time in every car-human relationship when you have to say goodbye for one reason or another. Today was just that day with me and Phaedrus. A couple days ago he started to leak green and brown substances. It turns out that he needed a new radiator and oil tank. With labor and the repairs to just get him to driving status would cost $900+, which was more than I was willing to pay since there were also other troubles I would eventually need to get fixed. So this morning I went to the car place they were holding him, and I cleared out all my belongings, signed over the title and said goodbye. There are some benefits and some definite drawbacks to not having a car. Pros: -I don't have to worry about gas and maintenance anymore -I no longer have to search for parking or worry about street sweeping Cons: -I will be at the mercy of everyone else driving me -I will have to figure out how to use public transportation and have to deal with the problems associated wit...

Leaning Tower of Pizzelles

Image
A few years ago my mom gave me an old waffle iron. When making waffles once I realized the iron plates come out, not only do they come out but they have pizzelle iron imprints on the other side and a pizzelle setting on the switch. I've been meaning to make pizzelles ever since the discovery but never found the right time to do it. The other day I was craving something sweet and decided to fire up the ol' iron. The batter was oh so delicious, I know, I know, there are raw eggs in the batter, but there was vanilla and sugar in there too and I had no other choice. If you have never had pizzelles...mine tastes like sweetened waffle cones that have been flattened, the same amount of sweetness as a fortune cookie. I love waffle cones so these couldn't be more perfect for me. Collect all four! Getting the right amount of batter per circle and determining the correct time took some practice, there were a couple batches that didn't turn out so great. Though ma...

Lions, Tigers, and Bears oh my!

Guess where I went last week! Yes, yes, I know I said last week...I've had a lot of work to do, please stop looking at me with such judgmental glances. Jen and I decided to take advantage of the nice hot weather and the summer and took Kaiya to the zoo. Normally I find the zoo to be sad, seeing animals in such a small area and all. Though taking Kaiya to the zoo and doing all the fun little things was great. We did the Merry-Go-Round, the collectible penny machine, the photobooth, icees, etc. Anywho, I took a lot of pictures, but I'm sure you know what a zoo looks like, so here are just a few. Surprisingly or maybe not so surprisingly the flamingos were super smelly! Did I mention that it was a hot day? Well, it was really hot, so hot that they had misting fans set up. They seem kind of gross to me, I don't really know why, but it was so worth it. Hands down the cutest animal at the zoo. Note that she is wearing her cute little zebra romper...

My (Eventful/Productive) Week

Image
Monday: I hermitted myself so that I could finish designs for a Chi Alpha event coming up soon. I only allowed myself one outing, which was picking up my ceramic piece from the shop. I knocked out a lot, I will probably share some of those designs with you later. Tuesday: I attended a vision-casting meeting for this upcoming year for Chi Alpha and am needless to say, rather pumped! Bring it on! Later that night the Farrems and I went to my college-friend, Becky 's viewing party (Becky was one of the 3 remaining contestants on Gordon Ramsay's Masterchef show) to see if she would make it on to the final round. Wednesday: I hermitted myself again in order to work on more designs and only allowed myself one outing which was going to eat dinner with my summer Chinese tutor, Eric. When I got home I was really craving something sweet so the roomies and I went out for cupcakes . Such a great idea. Thursday: I worked on more design work and read through several books as...

What did I do for Labor Day? I worked. I allowed myself one outing today and that was to pick up my ceramic piece from the "paint-your-own-ceramics" place and drop my friend's ceramic piece at her house. For the remainder of the day I locked myself in my house and ceaselessly worked on designs for an upcoming event. So needless to say I don't have tons of pictures to share with you today. Though I can share some of the not-so-great-indoor-nighttime- lighted-iphone pictures I took of our tartines yesterday. It turns out we weren't able to do the tartines immediately following church and had to wait to do them for dinner, hence the not so grand photography. Just know they tasted so much better than these pictures look. PS they got a little crispy, make sure they don't stay in too long. PPS this was the first time I have ever tried an actual fig. The recipe called for gorgonzola but I'm a pansy with a less refined palette and don't really l...

Beijinhos + Brigadeiros

Image
Have I told you how much I love working with international students? Well, if I haven't, let me do so now. I love working with international students, a lot. A lot a lot. What you see below is the product of spending time with just one international student. Just think, there are are 8,500-9,000 international students and visiting scholars at UCLA... I am one lucky girl! I'm kidding, but I am definitely blessed to be able to spend time with so many wonderful people from so many different places. Note: this pan was originally completely full to the brim with candies, notice how much has already been consumed.  We made beijinhos which translates to meaning "little kisses" (in Brasilian Portuguese). Beijinhos are made of sweetened condensed milk (of course), Nescau chocolate, and a little bit of butter. Brigadieros which translates to the highest rank in the Brasilian Air Force, are made of sweetened condensed milk, coconut, and a little bit of butter. ...

Garden Party

Image
Friday was the last day of August and I know I had hopes of doing a post every day of August (epic fail) and I didn't get a post in on the last day. What kind of person am I? I will tell you what kind...a busy one. One who helps friends put on a secret garden-party for their friends birthday (note: it looks like I was saying secret garden , which was one of my fave books/movies as a child, and I still have fantasies of having my own cool hidden garden; that and a library like Beauty and the Beast ). Left: our setting up of the tables. Right: Cherry Limeade and Watermelon-Strawberry Lemonade. We spray painted goblet-like glassware bright pink and red which was inspired by this  post by The House Lars Built blog. We also placed several different candle holders, jars and glassware on each table. It had a great eclectic style to it.  Just some of our lovely guests. As the night wore on, the tables became even more beautiful as the candle light started to ...
