My Rockabilly Weekend

Image
There was an unintentional theme to my weekend. It all started Friday night at our International Student Friendship pot-luck that we held at my home and my friends' home next door. We introduced the students to an all-American movie, Rebel Without A Cause. James Dean (ahem... heart throb) plays a rebel teen who is in a rift with a gang of other rebel teens. The movie is rife with pompadours, shiv fights, cigarettes and denim jeans coupled with members only jackets. The theme was continued Saturday night when we celebrated my friend's 30th at a roller derby event (Is it called an event? Or maybe a game? What have you.) Evidently a roller derby is like the unspoken casting call to all those associated with the rockabilly style. One of the girls I saw literally had an alligator tattooed across her thigh, which I could see through her fishnet stockings. We were surrounded by short shorts, blunt banged and red lipstick clad girls (very pin-up-esque), tattoos and a variety of hosiery...

Happy V day

Image
A day late but it still stands true. (Note: I am not one to do the 'heart' symbol with their hands but I couldn't resist just for Valentines day.) PS I tried curling my hair with those foam curlers, that's why I look like Shirley Temple circa 1934.

Mmmm good!

I haven't made a food post for some time now. So I thought I would share just one of my recent creations. I decided to break-in my hand mixer this weekend. Usually I bake in the traditional manual style but when I moved to LA my mom bought me a lovely hand mixer. Once I plugged it in it felt like a power tool. Which makes me think of one of those SAT questions... hand mixers are to a Rachelle like a power tool is to a handy man (I was going to say to a man, but that would be presumptuous that all men like power tools, but then I worried that it would seem like I was putting myself at the same level of a handy man which I clearly am not. So do what you will with that comparison.) Anyways, I made a chocolate bundt cake with a macaroon filling from scratch. It wasn't the best dessert I have ever made but it wasn't too shabby either. Can I just say that whipping egg whites into firm peaks is a million times easier and enjoyable with a hand mixer. I can be quite the messy baker...

Room Evolution

Image
In the beginning there was an all pink (with the exception of the dark green carpet) little room. The little room was then painted a pretty sea breeze blue with bright white trim and ceiling. Then furniture was moved in the little room after carpet was installed. Then the furniture was configured to maximize space. Room evolutions are seldom fully mutated but I do believe it will stay as is for some time. I just thought I would give you a progress report on my lovely humble abode. Here are a couple other views of the room. The closet is of modest size so the top shelf is rather packed. Don't judge.

Autumn

Image
I would like to say happy birthday to my little sister Autumn! She turns 15 today. We had her "gotcha day" six days ago, which means she has been with our family for 14 years baby!

Podcast Junkie

Image
I hear the first step of recovery is to admit there is a problem. Hello, my name is Rachelle and I am a podcast junkie. Step one-check! I have had quite my fill of them lately. Monday morning I flew into Los Angeles from Kansas City and was in the full swing of things by the evening. Tuesday I had book table and then service. Oh and by the way It's A Grind evidently closed in my absence and I am expecting to be in a state of mourning for maybe- the rest of my life. Wednesday was full of Kaiya time and making birthday invites time and more Kaiya time. Thursday was when it all went down, my binge on podcasts. I hadn't been able to move my things into my little house before I left for Kansas because the carpet had yet to be installed. So since I have been back there has been a lot of unpacking, moving, adjusting, cleaning, arranging, organizing, switching, turning and the like. Thursday was my designated day to get a bulk of the work done. So really it isn't my fault. It was l...

A Year's Worth of Eye Candy bahaha (Warning: features several pictures of me)

I sometimes use my Photobooth on my Mac as a mirror and other times I just use it because I don't have my camera handy. Regardless there are a lot of pictures of me and my family on my computer. I thought I would take a look over all the pictures taken in 2010 and thought it was neat that I inadvertently documented the events of my life in picture form. So I thought I would share with you a general jist of my year. 2010 New Year Dressed up for KC Repertory Theatre Deep concentration at work St. Valentine's Day Massacre costume Nose piercing Cooking burn First introduction to Yogurtland during LA visit Holding baby parakeet back in KC New moccasins after Oklahoma trip Funny face with Alicia Holding grown parakeet Me going sans makeup Cook books arrived on my birthday at work Had my hair cut off Hotel in Los Angeles after long trip First day of ministry Pumpkin carving Kaiya watching Hair trimmed in LA Thanksgiving thumb print card First attempt to use round brush with short hair...
